Cantautor británico. Proveniente de una familia de clase obrera, aprendió a tocar el piano, pero lo cambió por la guitarra después de escuchar discos estadounidenses de rock-and-roll. A mediados de la década de 1950 conoció a
John Lennon, con quien formó el grupo The Quarrymen, que más tarde tomó el nombre The
Beatles. Él y Lennon colaboraron en la composición de muchas canciones, entre ellas, algunas de las más populares del s. XX. En 1970 lanzó su primer álbum en solitario. Con su esposa, la fotógrafa Linda Eastman (
n. 1941–m. 1998), formó el grupo Wings, entre cuyos álbumes exitosos destacan
Band on the Run (
1973) y
Wings at the Speed of Sound (1976). Después de la disolución del grupo, McCartney tuvo varios éxitos en la década de 1980. En 1990 en Rio de Janeiro, batió un récord mundial al presentarse en un concierto pagado ante un público de más de 184.000 personas. Fue ordenado caballero en 1997.
